Painted Woods Jewish Farming Settlement, the first Jewish farming colony in North Dakota, was established in June 1882.

By the late 1880s, 30 or more Jewish homesteaders at Painted Woods had filed for land patents and earned their homesteads, following 5 years of farming and improving their land.

This site is dedicated to their stories and to their memories. Learn the history through official documents, personal narratives, photos, maps, newspaper clippings and other resources about that time.

We hope all descendants of Painted Woods homesteaders will use this site as a resource. Click here to find pages for Painted Woods families.  Please use the contact link to share your family's information so we can continue to build this resource!
